SEALER DO'S & DON'TS

The following list is a general guide to assist you in the success of sealer application.  If you are unclear or have concerns please contact C.I.A or your local Agent.  It is always recommended that a test area be trialled first.

DO Ensure you have the correct sealer for your application.
DO Ensure the surface is clean, free of oil, loose particles and most importantly is completely dry.
DO Acid etch closed concrete surfaces (e.g. Mirror finished by trowelling machine).
DO Allow sufficient drying time taking into account weather conditions (24 hours minimum recommended).
DO Apply sealer thinly and evenly (two coats are far better than one heavy coat).
(Does not apply to Natraseal)
DO Ask for advice.
DO Maintain the protective coat by reapplying sealer at regular intervals (12-24 months).
(Longer for Natraseal & Extend)
DO Inspect previous sealer coats for "MILKY whiteness", cracking or delamination and rectify before applying new coating.

DO NOT Apply sealer to damp concrete or moist concrete (concrete is porous and will hold moisture within its matrix even though it appears dry on the surface).
DO NOT Apply sealer in the middle of the day or to extremely hot surfaces (this may result in blistering and delamination).
DO NOT Apply thick coats (may lead to blistering, 'pork crackling', or failure to harden).
DO NOT Apply additional coat without allowing sufficient curing time.
DO NOT Apply more than two coats.
DO NOT Apply sealer over 'milky white', 'crazed' or delaminating sealer.

Note: Almost all sealer failures are the direct result of moisture presence or high temperatures at the time of application.

Application equipment should be cleaned with C.I.A Solvent.
SAME DAY / FIRST COAT SEALER

As the name implies, can be applied late in the day - the concrete is poured by LIGHTLY spray coating (generally used for Stencil Concrete).

This sealer is also used as the initial coat on Stamped or coloured concrete.
(Note: Stamped Concrete should be acid washed to remove excess Release Agent and to open the surface at least 24 hours before initial sealer application)

Same Day / First Coat Sealer has a higher solvent:solids ratio to ensure better penetration of the concrete surface and to produce a higher tolerance to moisture.
(Note: Applying this sealer thickly will negate the described benefits)

A coat of ULTRA sealer is recommended after a minimum curing period of 48 hours on 'new' concrete.  If concrete has cured, the recommended time between coats is 24 hours.

ULTRA SEALER

C.I.A's general purpose sealer.

This sealer is recommended as the second coat on new concrete, for resealing all types of concrete, and as the first coat on C.I.A Topcrete applications and Exposed Aggregate.  This sealer has been developed from a selected blend of resins to provide a durable, non-yellowing, protective, 'wet look' coating.

HI-BLEND ULTRA SEALER

This sealer is generally only used as a second, high build coating for C.I.A Topcrete.  If thinned it may be used as Ultra Sealer.

This product has a high solids:solvent ratio and is not recommended for other purposes.

C.I.A EXTEND      (Specialty Sealer)

Extend is a high solids, high build, acrylic modified isocyanate free, two pack, specifically formulated to achieve a smooth hard wearing surface for flooring.

Suitable for use on areas which require an extremely hard, yet flexible non-slip protective coating with excellent UV resistance, colour and gloss retention, weathering properties, abrasion resistance and adhesion.

Features:
  • High build
  • Hard, very durable coating
  • Good dry and through cure
  • Excellent mark and scuff resistance
  • Excellent chemical resistance

    Application:
Surface must be dry, clean and free from any loose particles.  Concrete should be acid etched and allow to fully dry.

Mix 3 parts of Extend A with 1 part Extend B then thin as necessary according to conditions and method of application.

Apply one full coat and allow to dry, preferably over night.  Apply a second coat and allow to dry with good ventilation.

    C.I.A NATRASEAL     (Specialty Sealer)

Natraseal is a specially formulated penetrating water repellent sealer suitable for any porous masonry surface especially terracotta, brick, clay, stone and concrete.

Natraseal is a clear invisible coating that does not alter the natural appearance of the surface.

    HOW NATRASEAL WORKS

Natraseal has a low surface tension and flows readily into minute capillaries and the surface cellular structure of porous substances.  The treatment penetrates up to 6mm, depending on surface porosity.  Weathering does not affect the water repellency properties of Natraseal.  After application the solvent evaporates and deposits an invisible film of silicone on the internal surface of the substrate.

Silicones are synthetic materials and have properties of both organic polymers and inorganic silicates like quartz and sand.  Because of their close relationship to masonry building materials, silicones bond well to such surfaces.  Silicones are natural hydrophobic (water hating) chemicals; even minute quantities repel moisture, and keep water from entering porous surfaces for years.  Natraseal does not clog the pores, but allows the passage of water vapour.  Areas treated with Natraseal can still breathe so that dampness can dry out.  Natraseal treatments properly applied are known to be effective for at least 7 years.

    MINIMISES RAINWATER PENETRATION

Contrary to popular belief, terracotta, clay, natural stone and concrete are not waterproof.  Rainwater and particularly rainwater driven by strong winds easily penetrates such materials.  Rainwater penetration through exterior surfaces can cause minor discomforts and annoyances such as efflorescence or salting.  Most importantly, it can also cause extensive damage to paint, floor coverings, equipment and merchandise.

    KEEPS SURFACES CLEANER

Natraseal treated areas repel water.  Airborne dirt remains on the surface to be washed away by rain.  Fungus growth is discouraged.  Possible corrosive chemical action is prevented and costly cleaning is not required.

    MINIMISES UNSIGHTLY EFFLORESCENCE

After application soluble salts are suppressed and remain at the lowest point of silicone penetration.  On untreated surfaces soluble salts show up as white, green or yellowish brown deposits.

HOW TO PREPARE SURFACES AND APPLY NATRASEAL

Surface preparation of both new and old surfaces is important:
    1. Repair all cracks and rejoint faulty joints.  Natraseal will not waterproof holes or open cracks larger than hairline cracks.
    2. Remove dirt, moss, algae, fungus, loose particles and paint preferably by water blasting.
    3. Natraseal should only be applied on dry days.  Avoid treating surfaces which are noticeably damp and ensure that treated surfaces will be free of water for at least 6 hours.  If surface is visibly dry it may be treated with Natraseal.
    4. Natraseal can be applied by spray, soft broom, brush, roller or the preferred applicator which is a lambs wool pad.
Natraseal should be applied in sufficient quantities to allow it to soak well into the surface.  The deeper the penetration the more effective it will be.  For this reason one single heavily flooded application will produce far better results than multiple light applications.  The quantity of Natraseal that will be absorbed and the depth to which it will penetrate depends on the porosity of the area being treated.

    PAINTING SILICONED SURFACES

If at a later date the surface needs to be painted this can be achieved using chlorinated rubber based products such as S.C.I. Concrete and Masonry paint or Everglaze Heavy Duty Colourcoat.

    CLEAN UP

Wash equipment after use with mineral turps.  However, application equipment once used with Natraseal should only be used again with similar silicone based products.
